'Lacuna' is a new physical art exhibition by the SPNK! collective, hosted in Burgh House, Hampstead from the 15th of June till the 4th of July 2021.
The lacuna has been defined as an unfilled space in a manuscript or narrative, and also as an accidental gap in linguistics - a hole in the pattern, a word which does not exist, even though permitted by the grammatical rules of a language. For their first physical exhibition as a collective, SPNK! had put out an open call for queer artists currently studying in UAL for their visual interpretation of the theme of 'Lacuna'.
The vivid responses to this open call affectively give new shape to the exhibition as a lacuna itself - either as an unfilled space open to the endless possibilities queerness can afford or more in line with the idea of an accidental gap; that is, as a thing that has always been emphatically there but yet systematically erased and expected to be absent. The hope then, is to both commemorate the queer experience thus far as well as to keep a sensitive eye on the possibilities ahead.
The show will open on the 15th of June as a private view. All works exhibited will be available for sale unless stated otherwise by the artist.
